Sia-UI: Load a wallet from a seed

If you already have a Sia seed with an associated balance of Siacoins, you can recover and use your Siacoins at any time by using Sia-UI on your computer.

Objective

Learn how to load an existing seed into Sia-UI.

Time Required

Less than 5 minutes once the blockchain is synced.

Things You'll Need

  • A desktop or notebook computer with a minimum of 10 GB of storage space. 15-20 GB is currently recommended.
  • Sia-UI installed. Don't have Sia-UI yet?
  • Your Sia seed.

Loading your seed when no other wallet is setup

Go to the Wallet tab. If there's not another wallet setup already, you'll see two options: Create a new wallet and Load a wallet from a seed. Click Load a wallet from a seed.

You'll then be asked to enter your Sia seed. You can either paste or type it in. It must be entered exactly as it was given to you: all lower-case letters, a space between each word, and no spaces at the beginning or end of the phrase. Enter your seed and then click Confirm.

The text you enter here is readable on the screen, not disguised as bullets. Be sure no one is looking over your shoulder.

Initializing Seed

Sia-UI will then initialize your seed, which means it is checking the accuracy of what you entered. This is usually just a few seconds.

If the blockchain isn't fully synced, this process will produce an error. Check the Synchronizing status in the upper right corner and wait for it to complete. In the image above, we can see that synchronization is currently incomplete at 94.1%.

This is the error you'll see if you attempt this process before Sia-UI is fully synchronized. All you have to do is wait for it finish, then try again.

Scanning the Blockchain

Sia-UI will then scan the blockchain, which is when it searches for all the Siacoins that should be in your wallet. This process can take a while, so don't be alarmed if this message is on screen for up to 10 or 20 minutes.

Unlock your wallet

Once scanning completes, you'll be prompted to unlock your wallet. Enter your Sia seed once more to unlock.

Custom passwords are not retained during this process. Even if the seed you entered used to have a custom password used to unlock the wallet, that custom password is now gone. You must enter the wallet seed to unlock your wallet.

Once you enter your seed, you may see messages stating that your wallet is being unlocked, and that the blockchain is being scanned again. This is normal, just wait for the processes the complete.

Loading your seed when another wallet is setup

You might want to load a seed when another wallet is already setup in Sia-UI. Start by going to the Terminal tab. The Terminal allows us to give Sia-UI text commands. Type wallet init-seed

If the blockchain isn't fully synced, this process will produce an error. Check the Synchronizing status in the upper right corner and wait for it to complete. Below is an example of the error you'll receive is synchronization is not 100%.

You'll then be asked to enter your existing Sia seed, even though the wording says New seed. You can either paste or type it in. It must be entered exactly as it was given to you: all lower-case letters, a space between each word, and no spaces at the beginning or end of the phrase. Enter your seed and then press enter.

Scanning the Blockchain

Sia-UI will then scan the blockchain for any Siacoins linked to your wallet. You'll see a small spinning gear in the Terminal window.

And if you check the Wallet tab, you'll see it working.

That's it

Your wallet is now recovered and unlocked. If you'd like to set a new custom password to unlock it instead of using your Sia seed, click Change Password in the Wallet tab.
